Poet Kaniyan Poongundranar
in Tamil Sangam Literature dated 2000 years back
This means 'any town is hometown, everyone my kinsman' - i.e. no one is a stranger to me and I will have no hatred for anyone and for any land. Rotary exactly symbolizes the words of Poet Poongundranar.
Unfortunately today the progress of mankind is marred by divisions in the society such as colour, creed, caste, religion, language, economic disparity etc.
Rotary is an excellent forum for all of us to be together and to work together. Ours is one big family comprising 1.2 million Rotarians from 207 countries. It does not stop there. If we include our Inner Wheel members, Rotaractors, Interactors, RCCs, Ambassador Scholars and Foundation Alumnus and Foundation beneficiaries, ours will be the single largest family in the world which has been engaged in service for more than 100 years.
Another great Tamil Poetess Auvaiyar said the rarest of rare thing in this world is to be born as a human; Not only to be born as a human but also to be a Rotarian is certainly a great privilege for every one of us.Rotary makes us a better person in every given situation. It widens our thinking and changes our outlook - towards our fellow-human being.
Rotary provides us opportunity to serve the society by synergising with fellow Rotarians in our club, in our district and with every other possible Rotary District in the world. Without this synergy, it would not have been possible for us to take up the task of eradicating Polio from the face of the world—one of the most ambitious and largest projects in the history of mankind executed by a non-governmental service organisation.
It is our collective responsibility to share Rotary with others and provide them the exciting experience you and I enjoy today.
Our District 3230 is one of the flagship districts in the world. The performance level of our district in terms of project, membership and contribution to foundation has been on increase. Year after year new benchmarks are set and successive governors increase the level of performance to new highs.
This year too our district under District Governor W. Anand would scale new peaks in every sphere of activity.
Nallini joins me in wishing you all a great Rotary year.
Yours in Rotary
