My dear fellow Rotarians,
Greetings! I pray that we will all have the health, energy and wisdom to enjoy Rotary.
We Rotarians are a privileged lot. We make a difference to very many people locally and across the world. Yet, in terms of sheer numbers, we are only 1.23 mill in the whole world and that really is not such a big number.
How do we accomplish all that we do? Where do we get our strength? To me the answer to these seemingly rhetoric questions lies in two simple words: Our organisation and our credibility.
Being a Rotarian is an experience. We see new meanings to similar situations even as we develop new perspectives. This happens as we move through differing phases of our lives. If I, after just twenty years in Rotary can feel this way, what about many of our seniors who have spent more than double that time? Talk to them when you get an opportunity and they will tell you about true Rotary experience.
My first request to all of you is, to experience being a Rotarian. Rotary is not a location for us to visit. It is purely the people and to experience it you must go to your meetings. Attendance at weekly meetings and projects is not just the first but the most important responsibility of a Rotarian. I ask you to feel proud of this simple ground rule of 50% attendance at Rotary meetings. Make up at any of the 33,000 Rotary club meetings held over 200 countries. Ask your fellow member to attend meetings. Do not be apologetic about our attendance rules and if you are, question yourself. Your club meetings will only be as exciting and interesting as you can make it and your physical presence, does matter. Every thing in Rotary starts at the Club meeting. Attending meetings is a habit; a good habit. State it, explain it, encourage it, emphasise it and experience it. The moment you and your Club state that attendance is important, you will see the respect your fellow Rotarian will have for Rotary. When you do that, make it worth the while by running your meetings on time, and in a workman like manner so that each can plan his/her time of arrival and departure. Make the Sergeants responsible and visible.
A well planned and properly run weekly meeting of a Rotary club, is indeed the first step.
Together, we shall Make Dreams Real!
